On this day in 1983, Canon 1374 of The Code of Canon Law, which replaced Canon 2335 of the 1917 codification was established. While not specifically affecting Freemasonry, it read as follows:
"One who joins an association which plots against the Church is to be punished with a just penalty; one who promotes or moderates such an association, however, is to be punished with an interdict."
Commentary issued the same day stated:
"While the former excommunication of Catholics who joined Masonic societies has not been repeated in this Code, a sanction can be imposed on those who join associations that work against the Church, and an interdict can be placed on those who promote or run such groups. Whether Masons fall within these strictures must now be determined by authorities within the particular churches."

Author John J. Robinson (Born in Blood) spoke at the Grand Lodge of Missouri on this day in 1992. He was a guest of the Education Committee. Robinson did not become a Freemason until after his third book, "A Pilgrim's Path."

Winston Churchill was born on this day in 1874. Although Churchill attended lodge regularly, he never held Masonic office.
