I now it is only the first rung of the ladder, but I have found the duties of the Steward to be the most varied about the globe.
I wondered if any brethren would care to post what the duties of their stewards are?

in NJ they help prepare the festive board for after our meeting and then help clean up. I'm sure their is more to it than that though.

In our Lodge (which is also GL of N.J.) it is usually a place for the newly raised brothers. It usually makes them feel like they belong. When we have no new MMs the PMs fill the chairs. Our refreshments are handled by a woman from the OES. She has prepared our refreshments for at least 10 years. I guess we are spoiled...

I think a young mason can benefit alot from being a Steward, not only with getting to know the brethren, but as mentioned by being involved.
When I have discussed Stewards with other English masons they say there are normally 6, 3 MM, 2 FC and 1 EA, sufficients numbers dependant of course. How many stewards do you have?

The duties of the Stewards are, indeed, varied and very important.
As per the instruction to the Stewards at Installation, "It will be your duty to assist the Deacons and other officers in performing their respective duties, and to make all necessary arrangements for the convenience of the brethren when assembled."
In the performance in these duties, by design, these junior officers - normally the newest to the Line of Officers - become acquainted with the requirements of the other, higher offices of the Lodge as well as become familiar with the Officers and members of the Lodge. Hopefully, their bonds with and knowledge of the Lodge and the Craft are strengthened and increased.

In Indiana: meal prep and clean up, catechism cross fire in several lodges and mentoring.
